09 Helsinki Human Rights

09HHR promotes the realisation of human rights, justice and equality in social services, health services, youth work, physical education, sports, and art. We strive to ensure the equal availability of services to people and assimilation into society regardless of language, culture, religion, ethnicity, age or some other reason or personal characteristic. We oppose racism, discrimination, and violations of human rights.

Dance for social change

Dance For Social Change is a three year project funded by RAY. The goal is to help children with difficulties to manage their lives better, diminish discrimination and familiarize immigrants and native Finnish residents to their customs through dance. We believe that through sports and dance we can progress the social integration. We strive for our goals by organizing dance classes and events, that involve mainly children aged 8-13 and their families and friends. Through dance children will hopefully enjoy and learn more about movement, self-esteem, take responsibility for themselves and people around them, while increasing their performance in life. We also hope to provide children with positive and secure role models.

Basketball for social change

Basketball for social change project is funded by the Education- and Culture Ministry. The main purpose of the project is to develop through basketball, the life and social skills of 8-13 year old children. HHR 09 also aims to reduce prejudice between different population groups through integration. The schools in the program are selected based on the diversity in their schools. The basketball clubs are important because the kids get a chance to have new friends and spend time with current friends. They also learn to work together despite coming from different cultures and backgrounds. This is all done in a fun atmosphere while learning basketball skills.

Successfull basketball tournament on 26.11!

The basketball tournament was a HUGE success and fun for all 72 participants. For the first time in it’s history, the 09hhr tournament ran smoothly and on time and most importantly, did not have any fights! Our system of making participants play in new teams, with players they’ve never met or seen before worked extremely well.

The 2 buses collected all the participants and dropped them off at Herttoniemenranan Urheiluhalli. They went straight to the lockers, changed and were directed to their designated courts.  The coaches then divided them in four groups (young boys, young girls, big boys & big girls). Each group had 4 teams and they all played for their own championship. In our observation, the young groups (boys and girls) immediately started working together as a team where as the older group looked hesitant for the first game…perhaps not wanting to pass, but finding out there is no other option.

We also had a shooting competition where the coaches picked the best shooter in the team to compete. Each group had their own shooting competition, done on a knockout basis. The winning gifts were for the whole team, which made participants to cheer for their team mate in the competition.

Lessons learnt:

The staff and/or volunteers who have been in 09hhr for the past 3 years, marveled on the success of this camp and have recommended the same format for future camps.  One other event that played a very important role in this event was the introduction. In the beginning of the camp, the Exective Director of 09hhr Nuran Bedretdin, the Project Manager for basketball for social change at 09hhr Pierre Jallow, and one of the parents Yama Ahmad Osman talked to the kids about the reason why we were there and stressed the importance of getting along, making new friends and not fighting each other. The messages were said in Finnish, English and Somali.

We were very happy to have reached our goal of helping young people from different backgrounds work together. We can all see the demographic change in each country in the world and we are happy to lead the way for young people to start working together peacefully.

Multicultural training program

09HHR in partnership with HNMKY, have launched their highly anticipated multicultural training program. The theme of the program is ‘instructing through multicultural education’ and it is aimed at coaches, assistants and helpers within the two organizations. The goal is to better equip participants who work directly with multicultural groups in order to make the most impact. The sessions use structured dialogue, occasional lectures and sharing of best practices.

The program consists of 4 sessions with practical assignments between sessions. The first of those was held September 15th at Hotel Arthur in Helsinki.  We had 14 participants and we started at 9am with a group breakfast, after which we proceeded to the main meeting room to begin the program. We finished at 1pm followed by a group lunch. The main aim of the first session was to build relationships in order to have more fruitful and open discussions. The first session was hosted by Jyrki Eräkorpi, the head of the social side in HNMKY and we had great reviews from all participants.

We look forward to the next session in the end of November with some surprise guest invitees. The theme for the next session is ‘coaches as role models:  how to handle the group and wearing many hats’.
